What authority is in my life?
Question: “What authority has God given me and how do I operate in and through this authority? Both the authority we are to be submissive to and the authority we are to exercise.”
God placed great value on authority as He is the one who created it. The Bible says that all authority comes from and originates with God. Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God (Romans 13:1).
Authority means the right to make decisions, command and enforce obedience. When Christ becomes our Lord, we are to be submissive to His authority over our entire life (Luke 6:46). God’s Word, the Holy Bible is the authoritative source of instruction for living a Christian Life (2 Tim. 3:16).
- Children are to obey their parents (Eph. 6:10).
- The wife is to cooperate with her husband, who is the head of the family (Eph. 5:22-
24, 1 Tim. 2:12), and are instructed to submit to their husbands as to the Lord (Eph 5:22).
- Husbands are to submit to Christ and to love his wife (Eph. 5:23,25).
We are to cooperate with authority figures and obey the local and federal laws of the land (1 Pet. 2:13-
Christians are to submit to the headship of Christ which is exercised through His Spirit (Rom. 8:14), His Word (2 Tim. 3:16), and Church leadership (Matt. 18:17-
Christ cannot be fully “Lord” over our lives if we harbor rebellion toward authority figures. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves (Rom. 13:2).
While God is the author of all authority, Satan is the author of all rebellion. We must be careful not to give Satan a foothold as this can open a door in our life to Satan.
Fortunately, God has given us authority over the devil so that we can protect ourselves and loved ones from His attacks. But this authority is only of value when we exercise it. I give you authority to tread… over ALL the power of the enemy (Lk 10:19). In my name, they will cast out demons (Mark 16:17). Click for more information about our authority.
We are expected to submit to the authority of God, the Church, our employers and the laws of the land.
