How Can I Be Like Jesus?
Question: “How can I be more like Jesus? To show Jesus’ love and concern for others? How do we manifest the characteristics of Jesus?”
Paul tells us that becoming like Jesus is a slow process that is only completed when we get to heaven. This will continue until we are ... mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him (Ephesians 4:13).
The first step in becoming like Jesus is to learn who Jesus is and what He is like. The best and only place to turn for this information is the Bible. We become more like Jesus as we daily study His Word and learn His characteristics. And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:2).
The next step in becoming like Jesus is to spend time in His presence. Spend time in prayer, worship, communication, and just hanging out with Jesus during each day.
Sadly, many Christians are more interested in advancing their life and career than their character. Jesus did not die on the cross just so that we can have a comfortable life. Rather, His purpose is to make us like Him. Then God said, 'Let us make human beings in our image and likeness' Genesis 1:26).
And what are these characteristics? A few of the many characteristics contained in scripture includes love, forgiveness, humility, obedience, sinlessness, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-
God wants His children to bear His image and likeness. You were ... created to be like God, truly righteous and holy (Ephesians 4:24).
While it is our responsibility to try to be more like Jesus, we must also realize that the power to change our behavior comes not from us, but from God. It is His work in us, not anything we can take credit for.
God does not force us to love Him, we have to choose to love God, and likewise, we have to choose to be like God. God works in us as we submit to His will. It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose (Philippians 2:13).
We grow by studying the Word, in recognizing God through worship, spending time with Him, learning in church and interrelating with others in a loving church environment. And helping others through service develops characteristics like Jesus.
Like all good things in life, we become more like Jesus by working at it.
