The Bible, Can Its Truth Be Proven?

Questions: “The Bible, is it the true Word of God? Can a review of prophecies, accuracy, unique structure, and scientific findings substantiate the Bible? How can the Bible be proven?”

Bible Answers

This article starts with general background of the Bible, evidence that supports the authenticity of the Bible and ends with conclusive, indisputable proof that the Holy Bible is the one and only Word of God.

General Background

The Bible contains 66 separate books, written by over 40 men, during approximately 1,500 years.  Some of the writers were priests, kings, prophets, others were poets, one was a physician, another a tax collector and some were uneducated fishermen.  However, they all claimed that they were transmitting the infallible Word of God, authoritative in its completeness by the Holy Spirit.

While the Bible was written over a 1,500 year period, the writers never made a statement that contradicted the statements of the others. Just imagine, over 2,000 years and no one has been able to prove even one verse in the scriptures as false. This then is the first evidential proof of the scriptures, written by over 40 men and never proven wrong.  I submit that this could only be accomplished by the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit.

The Bible’s Consistency

The Bible is remarkably self-consistent, despite having been written by more than 40 different writers over a time span of about 1,500 years, in 13 different countries and on three different continents. While having been written under various circumstances, and addressing a multitude of issues—t is amazing that with such diversity, there is such unity in the Bible. God’s moral law, man’s rebellion against God’s law, and God’s plan of salvation are the continuing themes throughout the pages of Scripture. Hundreds of controversial subjects are addressed, and yet the writers do not contradict each other. The Bible is an incredible document.  This internal consistency is what we would expect from a book written by the inspiration of God’s revelation.

The Bible forms one beautiful temple of truth that does not contradict itself theologically, morally, ethically, doctrinally, scientifically, historically, or in any other way.

Jesus’ Witness

Jesus often quotes the Old Testament, proclaiming to His disciples, all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me (Luke 24:44).

From about 40 AD to about 90 AD, the eyewitnesses to the life of Jesus, including Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, James, Peter and Jude, wrote the Gospels, letters and books that became the Bible's New Testament. These authors also quote from 31 books of the Old Testament. This is because the true author of the Bible is God Himself. All scripture is God breathed… (2 Timothy 3:16). What God wanted written was written exactly as God directed. …the words of the Lord are flawless (Psalm 12:6).

When the 40 writers wrote each book, they had no idea that someday it would be combined into the Bible as we know it, but amazingly, the books perfectly combine into one whole, as the Holy Spirit guided the writers.

"There where also 16 “non-believing” scribes, mostly from neighboring countries, who chronologically recorded the ministry of Christ.  Combined, their writings are so completed that nearly everything about Christ in the gospels is supported in their writings.

Historical Accuracy

One of the greatest Israeli archaeologists is Dr. Nelson Glueck, who has stated:  "No archaeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical reference. Scores of archaeological findings have been made which confirm in clear outline or in exact detail historical statements in the Bible. And proper evaluation of Biblical descriptions has often led to amazing discoveries."  A sample of these discoveries would include:

Scientific Accuracy

Many modern day scientific facts were noted in the Bible before science discovered the facts experimentally.  For example:

While the Bible is thousands of years old, science has never proven any point in the Bible as being false, but has proven the amazing accuracy of the Bible.

While some claim that the Bible has been changed over time, there are over 25,000 ancient manuscripts and fragments that substantiate that the Bible has not been changed.

Science keeps supporting the truth of the Bible’s accuracy. The Word of God tells us that God hangeth the earth upon nothing (Job 26:7). The fact that the earth hung in space only became known with modern astronomy. The scientists of Isaiah’s day didn’t know the topography of the earth, but Isaiah said, It is [God] that sitteth upon the circle of the earth (Isaiah 40:22). The word for “circle” here means a globe or sphere. While those of Isaiah time didn’t know, God the creator knew the earth was a sphere.

The Witness of the Apostles

If the apostles contrived to pull off a great hoax and all of their writing and claims about Christ were false, when arrested and threatened with death, wouldn’t one expect them to denounce Christ and save themselves.  But when these apostles saw their fellow apostles being arrested and martyred, knowing the truth, they chose to continue preaching Christ in the face of death. Not one was willing to denounce Christ.  They believed so completely, that they preferred to die rather that deny their Lord and Savior.  In the end, eleven of the twelve apostles were martyred, a testimony to their belief and faith in Jesus as the Christ, the son of God.

Bible Accuracy

Christians believe that the Bible is completely accurate while acknowledging that it contains statements that are (1) figures of speech, (2) non-technical descriptions, or (3) difficult to understand.  If there are errors in Scripture, no matter how small, the Bible cannot be our standard of truth. Are there errors in translation?  Yes.  Different translations do use different words in their translation, but the truth of God’s Word is still maintained.  Are there minor changes? Yes, for example, three words had been changed since the Dead Sea Scrolls where discovered from 1,000 years earlier, but in no way did these three words change the integrity or doctrine of the book of Isaiah.

There are over 7,000 handwritten copies or portions of the New Testament, and of these, only 40 lines are in question and none of these verses impact Christian doctrine or Bible truth.

If I do not accept that the Bible is 100% the word of God, I then start selecting what verses I want to believe and those I want to reject, replacing God and becoming my own standard of truth.

It is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18).

Your Word is true from the beginning (Psalm 119:160).

How can the Bible be infallible if it is written by fallible humans

Yes, the writers of the Bible were fallible humans, but someone guided them who is infallible, the Holy Spirit. God guided and instilled the truth in His writers, to assure that His Word is a true and flawless guide for His children.

In 2 Timothy 3:16, God proclaimed, All Scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Psalm 18:30 claims:  But as for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s Word is flawless.  Thus, the entire Bible is a fraud, or the entire Bible is the inspired, flawless Word of God.  There is no in-between.

The above evidence are certainly consistent with the premise that the Bible is true.  Yet, we must admit that none of the above evidence completely proves that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God.  However, the following offers conclusive proof that the Holy Bible is the one and only complete Word of God.

Fulfilled Prophecies

J. Barton Payne’s Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy lists 1,239 prophecies in the Old Testament and 578 prophecies in the New Testament, for a total of 1,817 predictions, nearly all having already been accurately fulfilled and may be represented as prophetic and proven by their accuracy to be from God.

Of the 1,239 Old Testament prophetic predictions, 312 were predictions about Jesus Christ, and over 300 of these have been fulfilled.  These predictions included His virgin conception, lineage, ministry, death, and resurrection.

These prophecies are specific, even naming the town of Jesus’ birth (Micah 5:2).  The 312 prophecies about Jesus were spoken by a number of prophets over more than 1,000 years and still there was not a single prophetic failure.

It is remarkable that 300 out of 312 prophecies have been fulfilled and the Bible makes it clear that the remaining 12 prophecies are still to be fulfilled, dealing primarily with Jesus’ end-time return to earth.  This alone provides amazing statistical authenticity to the Bible.  Today, the best of those who claim to know the future are only right about 50% of the time.  How could over 30 men, over a thousand years, make 312 prophecies about Christ, with over 300 being fulfilled 100% accurately without the direction of God?

God’s prophets predicted the destruction of many nations –Ammon, Edom, Moab, Philistia, and many cities, including Babylon, Nineveh, Tyre, and Sidon. More than 150 years before the birth of Cyrus king of Persia, Isaiah predicted His name, birth, and position and that King Cyrus would release the Jews from captivity (Isaiah 44:26, 28).

For example, in Daniel 2 a prophecy predicted the next three world empires (up to and including the Roman Empire) and their fall. If the Bible were not inspired by God, how could mere human writers possibly have accurately known about events in the distant future?

Fulfilled prophecy is the strongest proof of the inspiration of the Bible.  Accurately foretelling what will happen hundreds and thousands of years before it happened.  Of thousands of prophecies in the Bible, not one has ever been wrong.  Other books claim divine inspiration, such as the Koran, the Book of Mormon, and parts of the [Hindu] Veda, but none of those books contains predictive prophecy. Only the Holy Bible has God’s inspired prophecies.

The Conclusive Proof that the Bible is the Only Word of God

From Dr. Stoner’s book, Science Speaks, is presented the probability of one man fulfilling just 8 of the 300 prophecies that are mentioned in the Bible, often hundred of years before Jesus fulfilled them.

How is probability calculated?  Probability is simply the number of desired outcomes divided by the number of possibilities. For example, the probability of picking the winning horse out of eight horses would be 1 in 8 and 1 in 64 probability of picking winners in two races. The odds of picking 8 winners in eight races increase significantly to 1 in 16,777,216 or 1 in 1.67 x 10⁷ rounded in scientific notation.  Micah 5:2 foretold that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem.  What is the probability?  Given He could only be born in one town, and assuming 1,000 towns and villages existed in Israel, the odds are 1 in 1,000 of picking correctly.

Old Testament Prophecy

Lets look at the probability for just 8 of 300 fulfilled prophecies about Jesus.                                                                                                                                                                Fulfillment            Probability

Christ to be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2)                Matt 2:4-61          1 in 1,000

John the Baptist the Forerunner of Christ (Mal 3:1)     Mark 1:2-8           1 in 1,000

Christ to enter Jerusalem riding a donkey (Zec 9:9)   Matt 21:4-11         1 in 100

Christ betrayed by a friend (Psalm 41:9)                   Luke 22:21           1 in 1,000

Christ betrayed for 30 pieces  of silver (Zec 11:12)    Matt 26:15            1 in 1,000

30 pieces of silver to buy a potter's field (Zec 11:13)  Matt 27:3-10         1 in 100,000

Christ kept silent when on trial (Isaiah 53:7)              Mark 14:60-61      1 in 1,000

Christ crucified (Psalm 22:16)                                   John 19:17, 18      1 in 10,000

The mathematical probability of all eight prophecies being fulfilled is 1,000 x 1,000 x 100 x 1,000 x 1,000 x 100,000 x 1,000 x 10,000 = 1 in 10 to the 26 power, or  1 in 1 x 10²⁶. 1 x 10²⁶ in mint cookies would cover the entire United States over a foot deep.  These are also the odds if you were blind folded, walking across the country covered with the cookies, and finally picking up just one cookie, and it being the one and only cookie marked with a cross. Only God could possibly foretell 300 prophecies and have them all occur just as He proclaimed.

Now you may be asking, “What is the probability that 300 Prophecies about Christ could all be correct and accurate?” The approximate probability is 1 x 10⁶⁰⁰⁰.  To put this into perspective, the entire earth only contains 1.33 x 10⁵⁰ atoms. Only God knows the future so only God can give 300 prophecies and be 100% accurate.  Clearly only the Bible can be the Word of God, and the Word of God clearly foretold of the coming of Jesus Christ.

According to Emile Borel (A mathematician and one of the founding fathers of probability), once probabilities exceed one chance in 10⁵⁰, the probabilities becomes a certainty (Ankerberg et. al., op. cit., 21).

As Dr. Stoner concludes, “Any man who rejects Christ as the Son of God is rejecting a fact, proved perhaps more absolutely than any other fact in the world (Stoner, op. Cit., 112).”

Of the millions of books in the world, including all other religious books, not one includes prophecies of future human activity.  Only the Holy Bible contains the finger print of God’s prophetic truth.

The science of mathematical probability proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the Holy Bible is the true Word of God. Once this position is clearly presented, then all scripture can be used to support Biblical doctrine.  Rather than being on the defensive, Christians can be on the offensive, speaking from a point of certainty.

The bible is the only true guide to God and heaven

Conclusion

Of all the books ever written in the world, only the Holy Bible answers questions related to the origination of the universe, the creation of the human race, the source of the world’s problems and suffering, the way to holy living, how to please God, and what will the end of the world be like.

In thousands of years not one person has ever been able to prove the Bible wrong.  While science has never proven the Bible wrong, it has often substantiated the Bible.

Thousands of prophecies have come true, often hundreds and thousands of years later, exactly as foretold, because only God can see into the future.  No other Book in the world has hundreds and thousands of fulfilled prophecies that have never been wrong. No group of men could have ever produced a book with such accurate prophecies without the help of God.

Being the only book in the world proven to be the Word of God by God’s prophecies, shouldn’t we believe the Bible and follow the one it tells us to believe in - Jesus Christ. With odds of 1 in 10⁶⁰⁰⁰, only Jesus can be the Christ, the Son of God. We have a choice – we can deny the Word of God and someday go to hell or we can accept the undeniable accuracy of God’s Word that tells us that God loves you and is waiting with open arms for you to come to Him.

Between one and two billion people believe the Bible, trust God, are saved, and are going to heaven. The Bible is the pure representation and Word of God. The Bible is God’s love letter and map for you.

With the Bible being the proven Word of God, if you have not received Jesus, shouldn’t you start believing and following what the Bible tells you is needed for heaven? Shouldn’t you ask Jesus into your life?  Click to learn more about salvation.
