Who now has dominion?
Question: “Originally God gave dominion to Adam and Eve, then Satan stole it, now who has dominion?”
God, the creator of the earth both owned and had dominion over the earth. Dominion means to rule, have dominion, dominate, and subdue. After creating the earth, God created Adam and Eve. Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and overall the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground” (Genesis 1:26-
The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men (Psalm 115:16).
God gave man full control or dominion over everything that consisted of the world. This was horrifying to Satan. These new creatures would have dominion over him, and they looked like God, who Satan now hated.
Satan understood that if he could deceive Adam and Eve to disobey God, that he would gain the dominion over the world. Knowing that Adam and Eve would immediately recognize Satan, before going to the garden to deceive them, he took the form of a serpent that would already have the run of the garden.
Satan steals mankind’s dominion
Because of Satan’s deception, Adam and Eve ate the fruit, bowing their knee to Satan, and surrendered their dominion over the earth to Satan. Satan became the god of this world (2 Cor. 4:4) and mankind was subject to Satan’s control and dominion.
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned (Romans 5:12).
Satan had won the battle, but God had a plan for redeeming mankind. Genesis 3:15 tells us, And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. Satan didn’t understand that the seed God spoke of was Jesus.
Satan’s control before Jesus
While God provided the Jews the Torah or the Five Books of Moses and prophets to help protect and guide the people, the religious leaders so distorted the use of the Torah that it had little true value to the people. Jesus said to the religious leaders, You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires (John 8:44). During this time Satan had dominion and did mostly whatever he wanted with mankind. We do see in Job 1:11 that Satan had to ask permission to attack Job as Job was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. As today, Satan’s greatest desire was to destroy any relationship the people had with God.
And then came Jesus
Through out the world, mankind was living in hopeless despair and demonic bondage, but God still loved mankind and remembered His promise. But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship (Gal. 4:4-
Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. A baby’s blood comes from the father, so Jesus was born without sin and was not under the curse placed on humanity. Having not started life with sin and having not sinned during His life, Jesus was the only person qualified to pay the penalty for the sins of the human race.
For four thousand years, Satan had ruled the world, and now Jesus started His ministry, commanding Satan’s demons, and they had to obey Him. Worse still, people were worshipping Jesus in what Satan considered his world. Satan decided it was time to eliminate Jesus once and for all. Satan gave the religious leaders the desire to kill Jesus and for Judas to betray Jesus, not knowing that he was actually fulfilling God’s plan.
From the cross, to hell, to heaven
By Jesus’ death, the penalty for our sins was paid. He had taken on Himself all the sins of mankind, past, present, and future. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
Since all those who have retained their sins will go to hell, Jesus had to take all the sins of mankind to hell. He was assigned a grave with the wicked (Isaiah 53:9).
For three days (Matthew 12:40) Jesus was in hell. What he did during that time is not clear, but on exiting hell, he took the keys of death, hell and the grave from Satan, stripping him legally of the Dominion that Satan had stolen through deceit from Adam.
But no one can enter a strong man’s [Satan] house [hell] and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house (Mark 3:27).
But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder (Luke 11:22).
Since the children have flesh and blood, he [Jesus] too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil (Hebrews 2:14).
Jesus had outsmarted Satan and broken his power, his dominion. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work (1 John 3:8). Jesus had now completed His work on earth and returned to heaven.
If Jesus destroyed the devil’ work, why is most of mankind in such disease and misery
Why is it that we see millions and billions of men, women, and children around the would who have never heard of Jesus and who are in hopeless despair? Even in American you can see people living in hunger, poverty, despair, and living in the streets. Satan worship and occult activity are becoming widespread. Immorality has become the normal way of life.
Christian families are being destroyed and drugs and alcohol are destroying young people. With all the advancement of medicine, yet cancer and other diseases are destroying millions and millions of people.
If Satan’s power was destroyed 2,000 years ago, why is he still able to cause such destruction and death?
What can we as Christians do to protect our marriages, families, schools, businesses, and communities?
While the world is still under sin and the curse, we are no longer under Satan’s authority.
Since Satan no longer had his authority, he reverted to what had always worked before -
As long as he can keep Christians from knowing their authority has been restored, he can keep them helpless. To further deceive mankind, he started thousands of religions, many similar to what Christianity should be, but without any power or authority.
Soon most of humanity was blinded by Satan’s deception until men and women no longer knew of their power and authority and became afraid of even talking about Satan, afraid that he would excite his anger against them.
Being deceived, without knowing the power of Jesus, they were again being held in illness, disease, poverty, depression, and hopelessness.
What Satan fears most is that men and women may learn of their power and authority through Jesus and then be able to command Satan to leave them. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32).
As Christians, we have Jesus our Savior and the Holy Spirit as our testimony of God. All the power and authority of Jesus is ours, but all that power and authority against the enemy is only of value if we truly believe it and operate in it.
Most became blinded by Satan’s deception, stop believing, and stopped living in the power and authority that Jesus purchased for them. Being deceived, they are again acceptable to Satan’s destruction, illness, and disease. Rather than realize their problems were of the devil, they started asking, “Why would God let this happen to me?”
Many have become captives by believing Satan’s deception, but the truth is, Jesus had come to preach deliverance to the captives Luke 4:18) If we believe the Word of God, we can be free, we can operate in the power of God, and be delivered from sin. If we have faith, Jesus said we could do the same things He did.
Why? 1 Corinthians 12:12 tells us why. …we are one body, so also is Christ. We the church who believe are the body of Christ, with His power and authority, but we must believe.
Who has the dominion? The answer is that we have the dominion in this world against the defeated devil if we will believe God rather than Satan’s deception.
In the name of Jesus, if we are walking with God, we can tell the devil, sickness, and his destruction to leave and he must leave, because it is the same as if Jesus is telling the devil to leave.
When we lay our hands on the blind, deaf, lame, and sick, it is Jesus’ hands that are stretched out doing the work. Behold, I give you the authority to trample … over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19).
In Jesus’ day, the devil only had to content with Jesus and a few disciples, but today, there are over a billion Christians, many who believe and operate in the power of God’s Word, and sadly, many who believe Satan’s deception.
Who you serve determines the quality of your life and maybe even your eternity. You have the dominion if you will move forward in faith.
Jesus prayed that we would know his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way (Ephesians 1:19, 22-
Clearly we the children of God, through Jesus Christ, have dominion in this world if we will believe and by faith operate within the dominion originally given to Adam and Eve for all mankind.
This authority and dominion is not just for our benefit, but for spreading the Word, glory, and salvation of God to all the unsaved of the world.
