What is faith in prayer?

Question: “What does faith in prayer consist of and how can I increase my faith in my prayers?”

Bible Answers

We need to first address the questions, does God want to answers our prayers, what hinders God answering our prayers, and how can I grasp the certainty of believing in faith when we pray.

Does God want to heal us

God absolutely wants us healed.  Healing is part of what Jesus paid for on the cross.

by His Stripes I am healed (Isaiah 53:5).

I am the Lord who heals you (Exodus 15:26).

I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord (Jer. 30:17).

those who believe...they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover (Mark 16:17-18).

The prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up (James 5:15).

He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases (Matt 8:17). By faith I chose to believe God’s Word more than how I feel or what others tell me.

God wants you healed.  He sent His Son to earth to heal, cast out devils, raise the dead, and preach the Kingdom of God. God wants us all healed and will heal us as we meet His conditions for healing.

How is faith like a cooky

When you were a small child and your mother told you that she was going to bake you some cookies, you got all excited, you thanked her, even thou you did not know when she would actually bake those cookies. You saw the hot cookies on the rack and could even taste the cookies. It is the same with God. In faith, thank God for your cooky before the answer to your prayer is manifested. Such faith that you can see the answer before you receive. Confidence that God will fulfill His promise in His perfect timing.

Give your cares to God

First Peter 5:7 says, I cast all my anxiety on him because he cares for me.  What a wonderful verse. We are to cast all of our cares and anxiety upon God to handle for us because he cares for us.  When we give God all of our anxiety, we can be joyful and at peace because we have no problems or anxieties.  John 16:24 says, “… ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.  But if we start worrying about the problem again, we have taken it back. Then God no longer has it and He can no longer solve our problem for us until we again surrender our problems to Him.

God’s promises

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him (1 John 5:14-15). The question is, am I going to believe what I see and feel as real, or am I going to believe the eternal Word of God? Your answer to this question determines if you will receive many of God’s 3,000 plus promises or not.

After you have prayed, remember to thank the Lord. Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ(Ephesians 5:20). This verse provides us three very important instructions. First we are to give thanks for everything, second we are to pray to the Father, third we pray in the name of Jesus. It is through our savior that we may approach the Father.

When we pray, we may start to become fearful, “What if my prayer fails.” But it is like starting a car. No matter how powerful an engine may be, without the key the engine will not start. Likewise, I cannot heal a person by my own power, I need a special key. That key is Jesus Christ. Through the name of Jesus, I can cast out evil spirits and command healing.

The above verses, like all of God’s Word will do little good if only quickly read. To apply them, you need to firmly believe in your heart and you do that by meditating on them so that they move past our mind into our heart.  So that they become such a part of you that no matter how much doubt the devil throws at you, you can keep saying with complete confidence, “Devil, it is written ____.”

In this world there are two authorities, two kingdoms, two choices.  Of these two kingdoms, Jesus said, The thief [Satan] comes only to steal, to kill, and to destroy:  Then Jesus said why he came. I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10). We all start out being part of Satan’s kingdom until we make the choice to become part of God’s kingdom.

Satan’s lies

Satan’s biggest tool against us is the lies he puts in our mind and that affect those around us.  Lies that blind us to the truth. Lies that try to convince us that either Satan does not exist or that we are helpless against Satan’s power. Lies to convince us that God’s promises are false or that you are not worthy to receive God’s promises.

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils (Mark 16:17). Jesus said “In my name,” He gave us a power of attorney. We do not have the power. The power is Gods, the authority is Jesus’, and the power of attorney to operate in Jesus’ authority is ours.  It is the key to Gods power.

God’s many promises

The Bible has over 3,000 promises for prosperity, health, life, and our soul. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2). Why then are so many Christians not prosperous, not healthy, and not walking with the Lord.

 The main reasons are:

God wants us to receive His promises, but we keep blocking God. If we would just repent of our sins and unforgiveness, asking according to His will, and having the faith to believe and obey, we would receive.  But way to many of us believe the devil when he puts doubt in our mind instead of believing the Word of God.

We need to be Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8).

Truly, I say to you, whoever … does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him (Mark 11:23).

The devil tries to convince us of his lies, and way to many believe the devil, but we are told to stand our ground in faith and to cast the devil and his lies out.

Whom resist steadfast in the faith (1 Peter 5:9), In my name, they will cast out demons (Mark 16:17).

You should believe God’s Word with your full heart and shut your mind off to doubt and unbelief and thoughts that are contrary to the Word of God by casting them out.

I give you authority to tread … over ALL the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). You can tread over all of the enemy’s lies and deceptions. You have complete authority and power over the devil if you will only have the faith to believe.

Don’t just read the Word, but meditate on it until it becomes a part of you, so that you will believe so completely that doubt no longer has a chance to survive.

Partial faith

The Lord told an elder to call for prayer for a young man’s knee. He was prayed for and immediately his knee was better but not completely healed. Several days later I ask the Lord why it was not completely healed, and the Lord answered, because of doubt. Doubt prevented a complete healing and greater doubt could have prevent any healing. Doubt is a killer of faith.  Healing faith required keeping our eyes on God and His Word with confidence.

There was a woman who had an issue of blood for 12 years. She had heard of Jesus and had faith to believe. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” After she confessed, he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” Mark 5:28-30, 34).

Note that the woman was not healed by Jesus’ faith, but by the woman’s own faith. She was completely convinced that if she just touched his garment, she would be healed.

All of God’s promises are available to us through His Word. If you are not receiving then it may be that you have not fulfilled God’s conditions as listed above and have not appropriated God’s promises by faith.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2). Meditating on scriptures related to your need renews the mind and builds faith to receive. Click to review verses by subject.

A faith that sees and believes God’s promises and expects to receive having a complete confidence in God and His promises for miracles in their life. Faith in prayer is just like the child who believed they would receive their cookies. Believe with your entire being that God wants to bless you, to answer your prayer.  He is just waiting for you to truly believe and receive.
