Who is God the Son?

Question:  “Who is God the Son? Who is Jesus Christ? What is the relationship between God the Son and mankind?”

Bible Answers

Jesus asked, “Whom say you that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:15–16). Peter later testified that Jesus was foreknown before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20).  He was in the beginning with the Father, and the Firstborn.

Who did Jesus claim to be? , “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), and “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58).

John 1:1 says the Word was God.  John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. Clearly Jesus is God in the flesh. Thomas declared to Jesus, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28).  Jesus did not correct him.  Paul describes Him as, …our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13).  God said, But about the Son he says, Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom (2 Peter 1:1).  And Isaiah said 700 years before Christ, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).

Does it matter if Jesus is God?  If Jesus was not God, He would not have been sinless and His sacrifice on the cross would have been of no value (1 John 2:2).  Only a sinless God could pay such a penalty (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21).  Only Jesus provided the way for salvation.  Jesus said, No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).

Jesus is a transliteration of Yeshua that comes from Yehoshua and is defined as “to rescue,” “to deliver,” “Savior,” and from Matthew 1:21, “He Saves.”  It is the same name as Joshua in the Old Testament. Christ means “Anointed” or “Anointed One,” and is the same as Messiah in the Old Testament.  So Jesus Christ means “Savior, anointed one.”

The first prophetic mention in the Old Testament of Jesus coming to save mankind is hidden in Genesis 5 in which the first ten generations are listed.  They are:

English Meaning

The Blessed God

Shall come down

His death shall bring

The despairing

Rest, or comfort

Hidden within the genealogy of Genesis is the summary of God's plan of redemption.  “Man appointed mortal sorrow. The blessed God shall come down to teach.  His death shall bring the despairing rest or comfort.”

Genesis 3:15 provides the first indication of Jesus, God's son. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring [seed] and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.

Jesus has many names.  Only begotten, Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, Savior, and Creator of all. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made (John 1:3). Jesus Christ became the son of Man that we could become the sons of God.  for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith (Galatians).

Jesus healed multitudes, cast out demons, raised the dead, fed thousands, rules the elements and quieted the sea.  On the cross, He suffered God’s anger for mankind’s sins, paying the penalty for our sins, setting us free from God’s righteous judgment and eternity in hell, as the Lord had planned from the beginning of time.

The suffering Christ went through is incomprehensible to us, but the pain and anguish He experienced, He did not have to experience, He could have said no, but in obedience to the Father and His love for us, He willingly endured so that we may be sinless and able to enter heaven with Him.  And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground (Luke 22:44).

Roman soldiers carried out Pilate's order and crucified Jesus on a cross by hammering nails into His palms and feet.  His death saved us from both physical and spiritual death. Only Jesus can save us from our sins.  We receive His free gift by repenting, exercising faith in Him, and by obeying His commandments.

By living a perfect life free of Sin, as the Son of Man, putting aside His Godly powers, Jesus Christ demonstrates how we are to live.
