What are the basic steps to healing?
Question: “What are the basic steps to healing? Can I expect to receive from the Lord if I do not follow His instructions? What is the primary step to healing?”
Can we receive healing from God? Yes. How?
We first approach God humbly, realizing He is God, and as Abraham said, I am but dust.
Only God can heal and there is absolutely nothing we can do to force God to heal you or another. Fortunately, God wants you to be healed.
He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases (Mat. 8:17).
I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord (Jer. 30:17).
God is Holy, sinless, and He expects you to be Holy. You are holy when you have no unrepented sins in your life, including unforgiveness. If you are not holy, the first step is to sincerely come to God, asking Him to forgive you of your sins and forgive in the same manner, those who have sinned against you. Why, because We know that God does not listen to sinners (John 9:31).
Healing comes in only two avenues. 1) We either pray a prayer of faith, believing God wants us healed, based on God’s Word, Beloved, I wish above all things that thou may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2), or 2) we pray in faith, being guided and instructed what to do and say by the Holy Spirit.
In faith, we first pray for our own healing. James says, Is any among you afflicted? let him pray (James 5:13). Sickness may be from poor exercise, poor diet, lack of sleep, environmental factors, stress, genetic weakness, or demonic oppression. This would be the time to ask the Lord if the sickness is the result of demonic oppression or other causes.
If the sickness is of the devil, then we as Christians, have been given authority to use the power of Jesus against the devil and command in the name of Jesus for the devil to leave, and in the name of Jesus, he must.
If after fervent prayer, your own faith was not sufficient for healing, James tells us in the next verse that we should, let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14).
However, in the case of an emergency, you may not have the energy to pray for yourself nor the time to call your church leaders. In an emergency, immediate medical attention is likely the wisest action, and wisdom is from the Lord.
Remembering that healing can be either instant or stretched over an extended period of time (John 4:52), if the above has not brought healing, pray and ask the Lord if you should go to a doctor. There are many examples of God using a doctor and/or medicine in the healing process. But then God may want you to wait until the time is right for you to receive healing, or God may even want to protect you from your doctor. As with all aspects of life, we are to ask our Lord for His will and directions. The main consideration after finding the Lord’s will is to be obedient.
As with all aspects of prayer, don’t rush, but patiently wait upon the Lord’s answer, for the next verse of James tells us the outcome when we pray in faith, in His will, in the name of Jesus, and do not doubt. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up (James 5:15).
Some believe that we have the authority to command healing and others believe we should only pray in faith. I believe that we command when we are being lead by the Holy Spirit, but we claim healing based of the Word of God, when we are praying in faith.
If we ask and God tells us the sickness is because of the devil, and it often is, then we are told to come against the enemy, Satan, and command him to stop and to leave; we break his power over a person in the name of Jesus, in the authority we have received from Jesus. I give you authority to tread … over ALL the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19).
When praying in faith, …will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover. Mark 16:18.
Besides the conditions mentioned at the beginning, the biggest condition is faith, believing that God wants to heal. Many will say, “I believe in God and that He is healing me”, but when they do not feel any better, they say “I guess God is not healing me.” A man whose mind wavers between believe and doubt should not expect to receive anything from the Lord (James 1:6-
God’s Word are not just words from the past, ink printed on paper, they are God speaking today. God is standing with you now and saying them. God is speaking to you and you can believe what God is saying to you. God is truthful and does not lie. God has said it and we can claim what God has said to us. When we are in God’s will, His promises are guaranteed.
I declare that God’s Word is working. I claim it and I believe it because God has said it.
A prayer of faith requires just that, faith to believe that God will answer. In faith, we keep our eyes on Jesus and not on our problem. Keep believing that you will receive in God’s perfect timing and keep saying, “God wants me healed” until the truth gets into your heart and you receive.
Jesus told His disciples, Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give" (Matt. 10:7-
