Are heaven and hell real?

Question: “Are heaven and hell real? If they are real, what is the effect upon my life and my eternity?”

Bible Answers

Yes, heaven and hell are very real and spoken of by God, Moses, the prophets, King David, Jesus, and the apostles.

What goes to heaven or hell

Man is made of three components; the body that we see, the spirit and the soul. The body returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7).

Man’s soul never dies but continues to exist for eternity. This consideration is very critical since our actions now will determine if our soul goes to heaven or hell after the death of our body.

Of the dead, those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned (John 5:28-29, Dan.12:2, Is.26:19, Rev.20).

Some do not believe in heaven and many do not want to believe in hell, but both heaven and hell exist.  Hell is the only alternative for those who do not go to heaven.

Hell

Paul described hell as being so bad that it was beyond his ability to describe it. A few descriptions of hell include fire, brimstone, burning wind, fiery oven, flames of fire, judgment by fire, unquenchable fire, furnace of fire, eternal fire, eternal punishment, and fiery hell. Hell is a holding place as hell will be thrown into the lake of fire at the end times. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death (Revelation 20:14).

Jesus Himself says that the punishment in hell is everlasting - And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal (Matthew 25:46). The Bible continually warns us of hell and its punishment for those who refuse the gift of God. There are over 162 references in the New Testament warning of hell, and over 70 of these references to hell were uttered by the Lord Jesus Christ! And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, … for I am tormented in this flame (Luke 16:24).  The Son of Man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather out of His Kingdom all things that offend and them that do iniquity, and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:41-42). The smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day or night (Revelation 14:11). Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15).

Heaven

Paul described heaven as being so wonderful that it was beyond his ability to describe it. Although the Bible discusses heaven, it is not possible to understand the full nature of heaven from a human perspective. …as it is written: No eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them that love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9).  The Bible tells us that heaven is God’s throne (Isaiah 66:1, Acts 7:48-49, Matthew 5:34-35). We can be assured of its beauty, peace, comfort, glory, joy and love beyond human knowledge that we will experience in heaven and in the presence of God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son. After Jesus’ resurrection,  He was taken up into heaven and sat at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19, Acts 7:55-56).

Only Path to Eternity

Jesus is the door through which we pass or from which we turn away (Jn. 10:1-18). He is the only way to eternal life.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (Jn. 14:6). He is the only path to heaven (Matt. 7:13-15). But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:15).

Location of Hell

When Jesus Christ died His soul went into hell. For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth (Matthew 12:40). The Bible is clear — Hell is in the heart of the earth!

The Heaven or Hell decision

God does not make the decision to send anyone to heaven or hell, rather we make the choice, and we make the decision. We choose hell when we reject Jesus Christ. God does not permit sin in heaven. God has already done His part. He sent Christ to die for our sins, to clean us and make us holy and righteous.  He only asks two things from us. To love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30-31), and to trust Him in obedience with our life which is actually part of loving Him.  Blessed are all who put their trust in him (Psalm 2:12).

With God, there is no halfway.  We are either for God or against God.  So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth (Revelation 3:16).

The following are some of the sins that separate us from God until we sincerely repent and ask God to forgive us.

Factions & Envy

Fits of Rage

Hatred

Impurity

Jealousy

Lying

Murderer

Orgies

Pride

As we let God guide each aspect of our lives, He keeps us from sin.

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly [those who pull away from following God], the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death” (Revelation 21:6-8).

God has and still is patiently waiting for the unsaved to repent of their sins and come to Him. Those who accept Jesus as their Lord will spend eternity with Him in heaven.
