Can it be Proven that Jesus is the Christ?
Question: “Can it be proven that Jesus is the Christ of the Bible? What is the probability that Jesus is the Son of God?”
I believe that with the use of simple mathematical probability, Jesus can be proven to be the Christ and the Bible can be proven to be the only Word of God.
The best validation of any book comes from how well the statements made in the book come true. Of the millions upon millions of books in the world, how many can prove the integrity of their word by providing valid proven prophecies of mankind’s future?
As only God knows what mankind’s future contains, only He can provide prophecy of the future that man could not possibly know. Now if God provided only a few prophecies, one might claim they were only a man’s lucky guesses. However, the best-
Would you agree that no man or group of men could possibly make over 1,000 specific predictions about future events to humanity and have 100% of the predictions later come true? Would you agree that only God has the capacity to make over 1,000 predictions and have 100% of them come true?
In Isaiah, God declares that He gives prophecies.
…and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you (Isa. 42:9). God says that He will announce what will occur in the future. This is how God demonstrates His power and glory and demonstrates the truth of His Word. I am God and there is none like me. I make known from ancient times ...what is still to come (Isa. 44:9,10).
Jesus stated that he had the same power to predict future human actions and did so. See, I have told you ahead of time (Mat. 24:25), …and I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He (John 13:19).
God Himself declares that only He is capable of telling the future of human events. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).
Review of Bible predictions
J. Barton Payne’s Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy lists 1,239 prophecies in the Old Testament and 578 prophecies in the New Testament, for a total of 1,817 predictions, nearly all having already been accurately fulfilled and may be represented as prophetic and proven by their accuracy to be from God.
Of these predictions, 312 were about Jesus Christ and over 300 have been prophetically fulfilled and included His virgin conception, lineage, ministry, death, resurrection, and Second Coming. The remaining 12 prophecies deal primarily with Jesus’ end-
What is probability? If you go to the horse races and eight horses are racing during each race, the odds or probability of picking a winner for the first race is 1 in 8. The odds of picking the winners in the first two races increase to 1 in 64 (8 x 8), and the odds of picking the first three winners increase to 1 in 512 (8 x 8 x 8). The odds of picking eight winners in eight races increases to 1 in 16,777,217 or 1 in 1.67 x 10⁷ in scientific notation. The figure, 10⁷ means 10 with 7 zeros following.
Micah 5:2 foretold that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem. What is the probability? Given He could only be born in one town, and assuming 1,000 towns and villages existed in Israel, the odds are 1 in 1,000 of picking the correct town or village.
From Dr. Stoner’s book, Science Speaks, 8 of the 300 fulfilled prophecies are presented to demonstrate their probability.
The mathematical probability of these eight prophecies being fulfilled is 1,000 x 1,000 x 100 x 1,000 x 1,000 x 100,000 x 1,000 x 10,000 = 1 in 10 to the 26 power, (in scientific notation, 1 in 10²⁶) or
1 in 100,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000.
Mint cookies numbering 10²⁶ would cover the entire United States more than a foot deep. The odds of these eight prophecies occurring correctly would be the same as a person being blind folded, walking across the county covered with the cookies, and finally picking up just one cookie, and it being the one and only cookie marked with a cross. Only God could foretell such prophetic accuracy.
The odds of 100 prophesies all being fulfilled by one man, Jesus, is 1 in 10¹⁵². The odds for all 300 prophecies being correctly fulfilled are approximately 1 in 10⁶°°° (10 followed by 6,000 zeros). Obviously, only God could provide so many correct prophecies to demonstrate that His Word is His Word. In comparison, no other book in the world contains God’s perfect prophetic accuracy. Clearly God has demonstrated that only the Holy Bible is His Holy Word.
Would anyone not want to invest in a business where the change of failure were only 1 in 10¹⁵². This type of sure investment is the same kind of certainty that God is offering those who accept His Son, Jesus. Now consider the absolute certainty that Jesus must be the Christ of God and our savior with odds of 1 in 10⁶⁰⁰⁰.
According to Emile Borel (A mathematician and one of the founding fathers of probability), once probabilities exceed one chance in 10⁵⁰, the probabilities becomes a certainty (Ankerberg et. al., op. cit., 21).
As Dr. Stoner concludes, “Any man who rejects Christ as the Son of God is rejecting a fact, proved perhaps more absolutely than any other fact in the world (Stoner, op. cit., 112).”
The fact that over 300 prophecies about Jesus have come true provides amazing statistical authenticity to the Bible.
Some do not like the Bible or understand the Bible, but given that there is no other book in the world, including all religious books, that contain any indication of the prophetic hand-
Mathematically, I submit this is conclusive proof that Jesus is the only one that has fulfill the prophecies about Christ and that the Bible is the only proven Word of God.
The absolute grandeur and purity of the evidence demands a decision. God so loves you that He sent His Word and His Son to save you.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
If you are not a Christian, now is the perfect time to make Jesus your Lord and savior, for no one can come to the Father except through the Son (John 14:6) as only the Son died on the cross to pay the price for your sins (Romans 4:25). Click to learn how to be saved.
