How Can I Truly Know God?

Question:  “How can I truly come to know God, to have a relationship with my heavenly creator?”

Bible Answers

Non-Christians will never know God because sin separates mankind from God.  Likewise, it is a person’s sins that keep them out of heaven as God and heaven are sinless. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

You can be cleansed of your wins through the saving grace of Jesus.

So, how can I know God?

The first step to knowing God is to invite Him into your life. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12).  Jesus makes it clear that He is the only way to God. Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6). And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him (Hebrews 11:6). Click to learn more.

The second step in knowing God is to read His love letter, the Bible.  One must understand that the Bible is God’s flawless Word.  It is God speaking to you as the Holy Spirit enlightens specific verses at the specific time you need to better understand them.  You learn whom God is by observing how He reacted in different situations and what He said to those involved in the situation.  The best way to learn about your God is to immerse yourself in His Word that was written specifically for the purpose of introducing you to God, His will for you, and your future.

Unlike most books that you typically read once, the study of the Word of God is a lifelong endeavor.  As you try to better understand the Word and as situations in your life change, the Holy Spirit will teach you from the Word. And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:15-16).

Next we spend time with God, in prayer, in worship, in talking with Him to get to know Him.  In a similar way that one would spend time with a possible spouse to get to know them, you spend time with God in developing a relationship.  It is God’s desire to have an eternal relationship with you that explains why God created you and why Jesus died for you.  Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23).

So that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might feel for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us (Acts 17:27).

The last step is to obey God’s Word and actively share His love with others.  The final step in knowing God is to be obedient and fulfill whatever He tells you. You are God’s hands, feet, and mouth.  If you intentionally disobey what the Lord has told you to do, you are sinning, and need to start over in repentance.

Don’t expect that you will know God overnight, in a month, or even in a year.  It is a long-term endeavor that requires an effort to seek and know God.  Will you ever completely know God? No, the depths of God are beyond our comprehension.  Furthermore, we can never know God by our own effort.  It requires our effort, yes, but it also requires God’s effort to bring us along the path that leads to Him.  The more time we spend in the Word and communing with Him the better and quicker we are going to traverse that path to Him.
