How can I be led by the Holy Spirit?
Question: “I want to be led by the Holy Spirit, but am missing something. What am I missing?”
The Holy Spirit must lead all of those who want to follow God. And to be led by the Holy Spirit, we need to be willing to surrender our plans and desires to God’s plans and desires. It is very hard to obey God and please Him if we are not being lead by the Holy Spirit.
Remember that God is spirit and we are spirit in a body. God’s spirit communicates with our spirit through His Holy Spirit. The most common way of hearing is the inward voice. We do not hear the inward voice with our ears, but in our mind. Many Christians try to hear with their natural worldly senses and completely miss what the Holy Spirit is saying through their spirit. Our intellect continues to remain in control when we fail to develop our spirit to better hear what the Holy Spirit is saying.
A message from the Holy Spirit will always be in line with the Word of God. To test a message, you first need to know the Word of God. Be careful not to be lead my your own desires, feelings, emotions, or your natural worldly logic. Also, if you believe you are following the Lord and circumstances appear to lead you in a different direction, to not follow the circumstances until God clearly tells you to change direction. When you have received direction from God, you may start considering the obstacles and questioning yourself, but be assured that God will remove each obstacle as needed.
Rather than listen to others as God’s primary way of speaking to you, listen to the council of mature godly Christians to confirm what God has already told you.
To develop your spirit to hear God, you need to spend sufficient time in prayer until you are sure that you have the Lord’s leading. Patiently waiting on the Lord. Then when you believe you have God’s plan in mind, lay them at the Lord’s feet in prayer, asking Him to confirm His Leading. Recall that the voice that speaks to you in the spirit is the same voice that speaks to you in the Word. Meditating on the Word develops your spiritual perception to hear in the spirit.
Receiving God’s direction may be immediate, or it may take days or even months. Also be aware that a message from the Lord may be something that needs to be obeyed immediately or it may be prophetic of something years in the future. As such, timing also needs to be taken to the Lord in prayer. David said, My times are in your hands (Psalm 31:15).
Praying in tongues (Acts 2:2-
Always get God’s guidance and directions before making any decisions. But to do so, you need to be free of unforgiveness, ill will, and sin in your life. Even many of those who are baptized in the Spirit may not be fully submissive to the Holy Spirit.
Perhaps you have been waiting on the Lord and still see no results. Seek the Lord and ask Him if Satan is interfering with you receiving results. If yes, you need to cast Satan away in the name of Jesus. Click for information on casting Satan away.
The more time you spend in the Lord’s presence, meditating on His Word, loving Him, praising Him, and worshipping Him, the easier it will become to get your mind off of your interest and onto His interest, and the easier it will become to hear Him. You can become so attuned to the Holy Spirit that you will easily know what His guidance and directions are. You will develop a relationship with God in which you normally talk everything over with Him first. Then you will have God’s superior knowledge, foresight, and will leading you.
