Before reviewing the miracles of Jesus, lets look at the miracles of Jesus’ birth.
First an angel appeared to Mary and said, Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus (Luke 1:30-
Later a second angel appeared to Joseph in a dream saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit (Matt 1:20).
The next angelic visit occurred at Jesus’ birth to announce the birth to the shepherds. At the same time, wise men followed a star that lead them to Jesus. Then another miracle occurred, God warned the wise men to go home by a different route because Herod wanted to know Jesus’ location to kill him. Then in another dream, an angel came and warned Joseph to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus until He called them home.
In the Old Testament, over 300 prophecies about Jesus’ birth, life, and death are given. They included: predicting His virgin conception, lineage, ministry, death, resurrection, and Second Coming. These prophecies are specific, even naming the town of Jesus’ birth (Micah 5:2). The prophecies about Jesus were spoken by a number of prophets over more than 1,000 years and still there has not been a single prophetic failure.
It is remarkable that over 300 prophecies have been fulfilled. These miracles alone provides amazing statistical authenticity to the Bible. Mathematically, this is conclusive proof that Jesus is the only one that could fulfill the prophecies about the Christ and that the Bible must be the true Word of God.
The actual probability is so amazing that it is hard to rap our minds around it. The probability of all 300 prophecies being fulfilled is approximately 1 in 10*⁶⁰⁰⁰. To put that figure in prospective, it is estimated that the number of atoms making up the entire earth is only 1.33 x 10*⁵⁰. That is a mathematical miracle that cannot be logically denied. A miracle that only God could provide.
Jesus’ miraculous healing
The gospels provides details of about 20 miraculous healings. But that does not include the times he healed “all” those who came to Him. And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel (Matthew 15:30-
Jesus miraculous deliverance
Jesus set free those oppressed by demons by casting out the unclean spirits. We have a number of examples including the man at Capernaum synagogue, Gadarene with the herd of pigs, the woman bent over for eighteen years, and the boy that the demons had thrown into a fit.
Raising the dead miracles
Jesus raised Jarius’ daughter from the dead. He raised the widow of Nain’s son. And He raised Lazarus from the dead four days after he had died.
Jesus’ miracles over nature.
Jesus started the time of His ministry by turning water into wine at the marriage in Cana. He feed over 5,000 men plus women and children with only five loaves of bread and two fish. Then He fed 4,000 men plus women and children with only seven loaves of bread and a few fish.
Twice His disciples had their nets filled with fish to over flowing and another time Jesus told Peter to go fishing and opening the first fish’s mouth to find a coin to pay their tax, and it was as Jesus said.
Nor can we forget when Jesus was walking on water and Peter asked if he could walk on water and Jesus said “Come”. Another time he cursed a tree and it died. Jesus walked daily in the supernatural of miracles.
How did Jesus do so many miracles
When Jesus came from heaven to earth, he left without any of His Godly power so that He could be our example of a perfect man. So how did he manage so many miracles? Jesus operated in the spiritual. He saw into the spiritual, he heard in the spiritual. “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. (John 5:19-
Jesus operated in the supernatural through the directions of the Holy Spirit, and so can we. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father (John 14:12). How are we to do the same miracles that Jesus did? By following His example of following the same Holy Spirit. He has given all of His children the gifts of the Holy Spirit when we accepted Jesus into our hearts as our Lord.
“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:7-
The same miracles that happened throughout Jesus’ ministry can happen today through us if we listen and follow the instructions of the Holy Spirit. The next section will provide greater details on following the Holy Spirit.
