Why is obeying God so extremely important?
Question: “Why is obeying God so extremely important and even critical for our eternal future?”
How important is it to obey God’s will for your life? “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (Matthew 7:21-
Is God always pleased with those who are working hard for the Lord, who are prophesying, driving out demons, and performing miracles? Not always. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophecy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:22-
Jesus is not talking about the lost, he is talking about those who had accepted Him. Jesus did not disagree with the claims of prophecy, driving out demons, and performing miracles. But they did not see the real issue. It isn’t what you do for God, how many people you help, or all the good works you have completed for God. The real issue is, are you being obedient to God? Are you doing what God wants you to do? To obey is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22). God loves our sacrifices, but He values our obedience more. Obedience is always more important than our sacrifices of time, money, and efforts.
And how are most churches, companies, and homes run? They are run by the wisdom of man’s thoughts rather than the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Is it any wonder that so many churches are failing, homes are in discord, and work is stressful. Obedience is asking God, “Lord, how would you have us run your church, what would you have us do to bring the lost to you, how should we be running our households, and what would you have me do at work.” When we turn from the ways of man to the power of God, we will see miracles start to happen, because disobedience blocks our communication with God while obedience opens the pathway of communication with God.
Deuteronomy 11:26–28 sums it up, Obey and you will be blessed. Disobey and you will be cursed.
It is hard to take God’s commandments seriously until
we acknowledge that God is the sovereign Lord.
Jesus Christ is our perfect model. He was always obedient to His Father.
But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says… then God will bless you for what you do (James 1:22–25).
What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? … Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshipping idols (1 Samuel 15:22–23). Doing what you think is best, even service to the Lord, is rebellion unless you are being obedient to His instruction.
And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, "I know God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God's word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did (1 John 2:3–6).
Those who obey God truly show their complete love of God.
And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8).
Being obedient to God is one of the foundations of Christianity. Are you blessing God with your obedience?
