What is the opposite of Blessing?

Question: “What is the opposite of blessings?  A curse is the opposite of a blessing.  We are commanded to bless, but most of the time we are cursing others. How can we bless rather than curse?”

Bible Answers

A curse is the opposite of a blessing: whereas a blessing is a pronouncement of good fortune, a curse is a pronouncement of ill fortune.  “Bless” is mentioned 463 times in the Bible and “Curse” is mentions 178 times.

Curses are on the rise as people dabble more and more in the occult and in organizations where people take secret oaths that invoke curses. A curse is the action of some power, distinguished by the quality of adversity that it brings.  There are different kinds of curses: (1) Biblical curses, (2) Witchcraft curses, (3) Non-witch curses, and (4) Self-imposed curses.

1.  Biblical curses

The Bible imposes curses when people sin.  There are many curses in the Bible that are unto death. Take a look at Deu. 28, it has many curses for those who do not obey God’s commandments. However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you (Deu. 28:15).  And The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous (Proverbs 3:33).

In Deuteronomy 27: 15-26, certain sins are singled out as bringing a curse, notably the making of idols, incest, bestiality, treating parents with contempt, injustice against migrants, widows, the disabled or the poor, hiring a contract killer, and moving your neighbor’s landmark or boundary stone.

How to break a Bible curse.  Repent of your sin and stop doing what caused the curse.

2.  Witchcraft curses

Curses placed on us by witches and witchcraft. A lot of people are involved in witchcraft.  We may often not know that we have been cursed.  One can also receive a witch’s curse by going to a witch, fortuneteller, or Satanic cult for information or solutions to a problem.  One also opens themselves to curses by having demonic oriented objects in their home or car, such as: astrology charts, books about witchcraft and demons, demonic pictures, statues, or games about witchcraft and demons.

How to break a witches curse.  Throw out all demonic oriented objects in your home or car, break the power of all curses in the name of Jesus, and cover yourself with the blood of Jesus.

3.  Non-witch curses

Curses by people who are not witches: People can place curses just by what they say about other people. Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). We have great power in the tongue.  We can bless and we can curse.  We can curse someone without even realizing it. A father’s curse to his son – “You are dumb and will never amount to anything.”  Be careful what you say to and about your children and your family.  Before we intentionally curse someone, we need to ask, is this pleasing to God, am I doing all things in love?

Curses may be directed at you by others because of: hatred, envy, greed, jealousy, the use of magic, spiritual conflict and the desire for revenge.  You may have no knowledge that you have been cursed.

Some ignorant Christians will pray a curse that is contrary to the Father’s will.  When a Christian prays a selfish prayer about someone else, God does not hear that prayer but the devil may.  It gives the devil an opportunity to send a demon to that person.

How to break curses from another person.  Break the power of all curses in the name of Jesus, and cover yourself with the blood of Jesus.

4.  Self-imposed curses

What you say about yourself may turn into a curse.

If you say something negative about yourself, you are opening the door to the devil.  You may have cursed ourselves or loved ones and not even realized it.

Curses may come upon you because of your own conduct, idolatry, participation in the occult, sexual immorality, theft, injustice, direct defiant disobedience to God, and involvement in secret societies with rituals and vows.

How do you break a self-imposed curse.  Confess your sin to God, renounce the curse, ask for His cleaning grace, and turn away from those acts that caused the curse.

Prayers that curse

Our prayers can result in self-imposed curses rather than blessings. When our prayers are constantly complaining and whining about what we are not getting, our complaints and whining becomes what we do get.  Rather we need to be praying the solution instead of the problem. We need to be thanking God instead of complaining.

Are you cursed

It is often hard to tell if we have been cursed.  Some problems are just the result of living in a fallen world and other times the problems may be the result of a curse.  If your life is affected by constant lack of success and failure to gain any sort of success no matter how hard you try, by sterility, and barrenness, then a curse may be in operation. If you think this may be the case, then take the matter before the Lord. Ask Him if you are cursed and ask Him for His directions.

How to rebuke a curses

Breaking curses can be relatively easy for Christians because we dwell under the protection of the blood of Jesus Christ.  A curse has little power over a righteous person and Proverbs 26:2 says, ...a curse without cause does not land.

Ask the Lord to open your eyes to any area where curses may be deceiving you.  Any time you have deliberately or unintentionally opened any door of your life to spiritual influences not from the true God, ask for forgiveness for opening the door and cast it out in the name of Jesus.

If you think someone has cursed you, then bind the curse and break it in the name of Jesus. Also, ask yourself, “have I cursed someone”.  If so, you need to remove your curse and ask the Lord to forgive you.

Repentance of sins, breaking ties with the occult, and taking refuge in Christ are the main strategies we can use to break curses and protecting ourselves from curses.

How to prevent a curse

We can prevent or minimize a curse by living a righteous life, by putting on the full armor of God (Eph. 6:10-21), by breaking association with sins of parents and ancestors, by getting rid of object that carry a curse such as object of pagan worship and some pagan art, and idolatry or the occult (Acts 19:18-20). Avoid negative talk about yourself and others, and put God’s interest ahead of your own.
