Can strongholds be torn down?

Question: “Can strongholds of the mind be torn down? Satan erects stronghold in our minds to keep us from the true knowledge of God and to destroy us, but strongholds can be torn down. How?”

Bible Answers

As we believe Satan’s lies and deceit, they build one upon another until they form walls and the walls form a stronghold in our mind. Different types of lies and deceptions can form different strongholds within us. Satan erects every stronghold he can in our minds to keep us from the true knowledge of God and to destroy us.  To the degree that he is successful we will not enjoy an intimate relationship with the Lord and may eventually turn away from God.  Satan places a thought in our mind and makes us believe that it is our own thought.  This is a critical part of Satan’s deception.

In whom the god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them (2 Corinthians 4:4).

The Greek root for strongholds is "a place of strength," a place that is strong, fortified, protected behind strong defenses.

When the devil has developed a stronghold in a person’s mind, they believe the lie of the stronghold and have a very difficult time believing truth that is presented to them. A stronghold is not a spirit, but it has been created by an evil spirit, and is attended by the evil spirit. Kind of like a farmer attending his fields.  A stronghold can open the door to more spiritual deceptions.

Many Christians struggle in their walk, because they fail to remove strongholds.  This happens because the enemy is occupying a part of their life.  When a person accepts the Lord, they receive a renewed spirit and the Holy Spirit, but it is our responsibility to renew our mind with the Word of God.  Unless these strongholds are pulled down, we will continue to struggle.  In time, Satan may obtain his objective, to build strongholds in our mind that persuades us to turn from God and pursue the temporary things of the world.  Strongholds in the mind of non-Christians can be very effective at blocking the truth of the Word.

Strongholds include: race prejudice, materialism (the love of things), pride (of person, society, a nation, or religion), guilt, self-condemnation, fear and phobias, immorality and sexual perversion, drugs, love of money, violence, and alcoholism. Strongholds can hurt a family, town, church, or a nation.

Another horrible stronghold that is destroying many churches today is that pastors and ministers preach God’s love but never mention and even speak against the conditions, requirements, judgment, and power of God. Some deceive by omission, and others deceive by omission and denial. Being deceived, they deny the truth of God’s Word. They are sending many of the sheep that they are supposed to lead, to hell. This is an excellent example of the importance of each individual’s knowing the Word of God.

Satan is very busy distributing his lies and deception, and most people, businesses, and governments are occupied with strongholds built upon Satan’s lies and deceptions. Rather than running or hiding from them in silence, these strongholds are what Christians are to come against and attack in the name and power of Jesus.

People with stronghold(s) often do not see God’s forgiving nature, and they do not see themselves correctly through God’s eyes. They believing that God does not love them, does not care about them, that God cannot be trusted with their life even while acknowledging what the Word says. Satan continually reminds them of their past (which has been forgiven if they have repented) and convinces them that their sins can never be forgiven. Strongholds are based on lies from the devil and the devil continuously keeps renewing and strengthening his strongholds.  All strongholds pervert a person’s image of themselves and of God.

A person may have strongholds passed onto them from past generations.  The sins of the fathers are passed to the children until a generation breaks the stronghold. Strongholds passed on from generation to generation can include: drugs, lewdness, love of money, violence, adultery, pride, fornication, alcoholism, and many other acts of sin. Unfortunately, people often do not know any better because they have observed and learned these stronghold patterns from their parents, and do the same.

Tearing Down Strongholds

Strongholds are built upon Satan’s lies and deception and we destroy strongholds with the truth. We find the only absolute truth in the Word of God.  We fight the devil’s lies and deception with …the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17).

We use the sword of the Spirit, the Word as a weapon, and we pray that the weapons of our warfare are not of this world, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down arguments and every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5), in the name of Jesus. We set people free by pulling down their strongholds through the mighty power of God.

Strongholds are torn down as you meditate on God's Word, which reprograms your mind to think differently.  As you see how precious you are in God’s eyes, you will see yourself in a different light.  When you are able to expose Satan’s lie to the truth of the Word of God, Satan’s power is broken.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).

In Matthew 12:29, Jesus explains that to overturn the works of the devil, we must bind the devil first.  Or else how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.  We first bind the devil in the name of Jesus, to break his power in the situation, then we can start taking back that which was stolen and stop his actions.

God has equipped us to overcome Satan’s power.  The Apostle Paul said that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal [of a fleshly or earthly nature], but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds" (2 Cor. 10:4).

Stopping Strongholds

To stop building strongholds, compare each thought with the Word of God.  If the thought contradicts the Word, then you need to say “In Jesus’ name, I bind that thought and cast it away from me.”

Listening to and reasoning with the things the devil puts in your mind is exactly what he wants you to do.  It feeds his strongholds when you allow your mind to meditate on Satan's word instead of God's Word.

A person who has a demon behind their stronghold(s) may find it nearly impossible to tear them down because the demon will be working hard at rebuilding and holding those strongholds in place. If this is the case, then the demon needs to be driven out through deliverance in Jesus' name. Click for more info on deliverance. Then the stronghold will come down much easier and not easily return.

Once we recognize that we have a stronghold, ask the Lord for understanding and wisdom in pulling the stronghold down.  Ask for God’s power, guidance, help and His mighty Word in replacing the stronghold’s lies and deception with the Word of truth.

Strongholds are the fortresses of Satin’s lies and deception in our minds to block the truth of God’s Word. Strongholds make a person a prisoner to the lies and deception. The primary means of stronghold destruction is through prayer, casting out the stronghold(s) and renewing the mind with the Word of God.
