Should I surrender to God?
Question: “Should I surrender to God and if yes, why is it so important to surrender to God?”
People do not like the connotation that “Surrender” suggests. In war, surrender suggests loss because of an inability to continue. It is not a desired selection, but a position that is forced on the loser that results in loss of control. However, with God, surrender is a choice, a selection, because surrendering to God demonstrates our love, trust, and faith in our heavenly Father.
Surrendering to God does not mean immediately packing your bags and going to a foreign country. What it does mean is continuing with what you are doing until God calls you to do something else and being willing to follow. In so doing, we wonderfully and surprisingly discover we have a richer and more meaningful life, a closer walk with God, and a life free from the cares of this world.
Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (Psalm 55:22).
Trusting God can be compartmentalized where we intentionally or unintentionally trust God with some areas of our life, but not with other areas. However, surrendering our life needs to encompass our entire life. Surrendering to the Lord is when we say “God, I give you all I am and all I have.” It goes beyond trusting God with selected areas of our life, to trusting Him with our entire life. Surrendering to God is the completion of the “Trusting God with all your heart” process. God only becomes our Lord when we have completely surrendered to Him.
Your decision to who will be running your life will determine the course your life will take. It will determine your success at pleasing God and the degree of God’s blessings. He must become greater; I must become less (John 3:30).
But how do I surrender to God when the pull of the world is so strong? The secret is what you permit to be the focus of your attention and thoughts. Remember that your entire life is run by your thoughts. Your thoughts are either submitted to Satan and the things of this world, or submitted to God and heavenly things. Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on this earth (Colossians 3:2). Surrendering means that Christ is the Lord of our life and that we are willing to trust God completely.
Remember, what you are being asked to surrender is not really your own. You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body (1 Corinthians 6:20).
He only becomes your Lord when you are completely surrendered to Him. You can pray something like, "Heavenly Father, Lord I trust you with all my heart. I surrender to you all of my unforgiveness, all of my sins, all of my willful ways, all of my hurts and pain. I surrender my life, my desires, my will, all I am and all I have to you and ask you to guide me, to counsel me, and to lead me in your will. In Jesus’ Holy name I pray. Thank you Lord, Amen.”
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you (John 15:9).
…neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:39).
I ask you. Will you surrender to Christ? Will you unconditionally surrender all you are and all you have, mind, body, and will to God? Will you trust Him sufficiently to surrender completely to Him?
I hope you will say that I love God, I trust God, I completely surrender to God and ask Him to be the captain of my life. Will you follow God and do that?
