What are the five types of prayer?

Question: “What are the five types of prayer that most people use?”

Bible Answers

Most people utilize one of the following types of prayer and faith.

1.  Negative Faith Prayer

A negative prayer produces results opposite from those wanted. For example,  “Lord, I hope you will help Aunt Nancy, but I know she is going to die.” We have confessed and prayed for Aunt Nancy to die.

2.  Minimal Faith Prayer

A minimal faith prayer is just that, a prayer with minimum faith and no power.  It is a prayer that no one expects to be answered.  For God said, And without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).

3.  Begging Prayer

A begging prayer is a prayer in which we are trying to sell God on the idea that God should answer the prayer because of a person’s great attributes, but what does God think of our human righteousness?  But our righteousness is like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).  We are only righteous through Christ Jesus.

4.  Prayer Based on the Word

When we pray the Word of God, with faith, we put God on notice that we believe that His Word is flawless, that we believe that God stands behind His Word, that we believe His Word never fails, and we believe His promises will result.  We start with a picture of the result and in God’s timing, sometimes immediately, sometimes later, the answer is manifested.  In faith, we pray beyond our reason, expecting a miracle from God.

5.  Prayer Directed by the Holy Spirit

Prayer directed by the Holy Spirit is always in alignment with the Word of God; but now He is telling us exactly what to do and what to say.  Praying as the Holy Spirit directs is the optimum way to pray. This is the way that Jesus healed. Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does (John 5:19).  Christ’s ministry started immediately after He was baptized with the Holy Spirit. Healing directed by the Holy Spirit never fails.

For optimum prayer results, use approaches #4 and 5 above.

Remember, God only listens to the heart that comes to Him with confidence, belief, and faith.
