How can I have victory over Satan?

Question: “How can I have victory over Satan when he attacks us?”

Bible Answers

Jesus said, I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10b).  It is Jesus desire that we have a full life.  Why then are so many not experience this full life?  Jesus also answered this question.  Because The thief [devil] comes only to steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10a). The devil is out to destroy us.  Like any person that may be attacked, we must be on guard if we hope to defend ourselves.

Now some may blame problems in their life on God. Why is God doing or letting this happen to me?  But we need to remember that God so loves us that He send Jesus to die for our sins.  It is the devil who is doing all that he can to steal our joy, peace, health, and prosperity.  And if we permit him, he will even steal our soul.

We are not only attacked when we are doing something wrong, we can also be attacked when we are in God’s will. For example, the Apostle Paul was stoned, beaten, and imprisoned.  Why?  Because the devil wanted to stop all the good work Paul was doing, and he wants to stop you. Knowing that an attack may come, we stay on guard and stay on the path the Lord has given us.  Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

So how do we defend ourselves from the enemy and put the devil on the run?  James 4:7 tells us, Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

When the devil attacks us, we can boldly stand in the name of Jesus and command the devil to leave.  Be it an idea, a thought, depression, conviction, dream, vision, or a physical attack, we command it to leave in the name of Jesus.  But let us not forget the beginning of this verse, Submit yourselves, then, to God. It is submitting to God that permits the power of the Holy Spirit to operate through us. Then in the name of Jesus we can stand and resist the devil, commanding him to go in the name of Jesus and the devil will flees.  Why does he flee? Not because of us, but because of the power and authority that we are standing in; as we stand in the name of Jesus.

And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons (Mark 16:17).

The devil will try to destroy us, and if we let him, he will, but if we stand in the authority that Jesus died to give us, by faith, in the strength of the Lord, we will be victorious.
