What does the Bible say about women pastors?
Question: “What does the Bible say about woman pastors? Can a woman be a pastor or a senior pastor?”
This is a hotly debated issue. Paul said in 1 Timothy 2:12, I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.
Others claim that it was applicable 2,000 years ago, but not today. I believe the answer can be found in Ephesians 5:23, For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Clearly, it is God’s desire that the husband is to be the head of the family, and in the same manner, a church or a Sunday School Class (with men) is a family and should be led by a man.
This does not preclude a woman from ministering in all other areas where she is not the spiritual head, nor even ministering to the church where she is not the senior pastor of the church. However, there are cases in the Bible and today when the Lord has called a woman into a senior leadership role. This is very rare and it is important that these special callings are of the Lord and not based on man’s or woman’s own desires.
